What is sex therapy?
I’m SO glad you asked!
When people hear the words sex therapy, they often picture scenarios that are completely different from what actually happens. It makes sense — sex is rarely talked about openly, and when it is, it’s often surrounded by jokes, shame, or myths. The truth is, sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy in which various topics related to intimacy, relationships, sexual concerns, and pleasure can be openly and honestly discussed.
What does an actual session look like?
We talk about what’s bringing you in for services
Maybe sex feels painful
Maybe your desire has changed or feels mismatched between you and a partner
Maybe you want to explore kink, polyamory, or other parts of your sexual identity in a safe place
Maybe you just want a healthier, more confident relationship with your body and sexuality
We explore the bigger picture
As with most things, it is helpful to understand the whole context in which the symptom(s) exist. Together we’ll look at:
Stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma that might affect intimacy
Beliefs about sex from family, culture, or religion
Medical issues or medications that might be at play
Relationship dynamics, attachment styles, and communication patterns
We create a plan together
Depending on your goals, we might:
Work on communication skills with a partner
Unpack shame or negative beliefs about sex
Build comfort with your body through mindfulness or gradual exercises
Address emotional blocks using approaches like EFT or IFS
Talk through practical strategies for navigating desire, arousal, or intimacy
What sex therapy is not:
It’s not sexual activity with your therapist
It’s not about judgment or telling you what you “should” want
It’s not limited to couples or cules —individuals benefit, too
